Sam Sweet

It was the excitement of blowing glass that drew Sam to work with the material and “now I can’t think in anything else”. Sam combines traditional techniques with modern design.  Her blown lead crystal bottles are design classics, cut meticulously by hand and finished to exacting standards. Lead crystal has the most brilliant sparkle when cut and polished, it transforms that most familiar of objects, the milk bottle and the pop bottle, into beautiful pieces of art.  Objects to be loved and treasured.  Sam studied with Pilchuck Glass School and the Royal College of Art.  A residency at Broadfield House Glass Museum enabled Sam to look closely at work of past masters “I often refer back to these pieces now and the wealth of skills used to make them”. These experiences translate into pieces of exceptional quality and craftsmanship. “Design is very important but I always want to match it with quality craftsmanship”.

The bottles are handblown and hand cut in the UK.  Once blown each piece is annealed to remove stresses in the glass before a pattern can be cut into the surface.  The cutting wheels leave a matt finish which has to be polished to create the shiny prisms of the finished pieces.  At the end of the making process they are individually signed.
